Īlthough Amy was originally created as a character for the video game series, she first appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog manga and The Adventures of SONIC the Hedgehog series published by Shogakukan. Amy's hairband and trainers reflect Naoto Ohshima's taste, while her mannerisms reflect the kind of traits Kazuyuki Hoshino looked for in women at the time. According to Hoshino, there were many voices involved in the creation of the character, including staff members from various departments and editors of the then upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog manga series. Naoto Ohshima created the original character design, which was then finalized by Kazuyuki Hoshino. Instead, it was decided that a one-way relationship, where Amy's affection for Sonic is unrequited, would be more interesting. However, it was felt that it would go against Sonic's personality for him to be locked into a standard cartoon relationship like Mickey and Minnie. Humans have struggled to come up with a system to accurately detect a Pseudodont’s sex. Pseudodonts have three biological sexes that they say are very obvious to detect. Pseudodont literature mentions a sense of taste as well, but the Humans haven’t yet found out which organ(s) detect that. Their sense of smell is superior to that of a humans detecting certain pheromones is as important to Pseudodonts as body language is to Humans. They can hear some things via an organ analogous to a gas bladder, but compared to humans their hearing is very imprecise. Pseudodonts primarily communicate through vasodilation in their fins. The large translucent crystal on their backs are their visual organ. A Pseudodont’s actual mouth is located on the dorsal side between their tentacles (“dorsal” here meaning opposite of the eye). Pseudodonts are named so because their “teeth” aren’t actually teeth they are mobile wedges of a hard bone-like material located at the superior end of the body.
